This is a question that I often get asked. The truth is that accent reduction is not right for everyone. If you do not travel outside of the region where your accent is the “standard accent” then chances are, people understand you perfectly and you do not have a problem communicating your thoughts and ideas. If, however, you find yourself living in an area where your accent is no longer standard, or you are at a new job where you are communicating with clients living in other regions, accent reduction might be something you would want to consider. In fact, even if you are living or communicating with a population of individuals that does not speak with a “Standard American Accent”, due to popular media, which has been using this accent as their standard for over the past 50 years, it is generally accepted that everyone now has a clear understanding of what this accent is supposed to sound like, and therefore can understand it with ease. As you might now see, there is a huge advantage to being able to communicate within the sounds of the Standard American Accent, both on a personal level, as well as a professional level. It is up to you to decide if accent reduction is right for you and will benefit your life in a positive way. Fortunately, the plan that I create for each individual is tailored specifically to their accent, and how their mouths are forming the phonetic sounds of the Standard American Accent that they are trying to learn. Because of this, my clients will typically begin to see results within 2 one hour sessions (with daily practice!), and quickly reach their goal of communicating with confidence and ease.
